We Need More Color in Our Lives and Less Plastic in Our Oceans!
The Marta Hewett Gallery is excited to announce our partnership with Ocean Sole. Ocean Sole is a Kenyan social enterprise whose mission is to up-cycle the Earth's flip-flop pollution into inspiring art, to promote conservation of our oceans and create employment opportunities in under developed communities. This hippo is handmade in Kenya from hundreds of flip flops that were thrown away, ended up in the ocean and washed up on the beaches. Ocean Sole turns this enormous pollution problem into giant "one-of-a-kind" creations.
Ocean Sole collects and re-purposes over 400,000 flip flops annually. The Ocean Sole Foundation receives 25% of the profit from all "Giant" sculptures. The foundation then funds other recycling and conservation programs and promotes greater ecological awareness among the local population.
Not ready for a life size hippo to brighten your surroundings? We have modest sized giraffes, elephants and other safari species that colorfully capture the spirit of the savanna arriving soon from Africa. Each is constructed and carved entirely by hand at Ocean Sole.
