A study in contrasts in glass art, "Double Vision" showcases Louisville, KY artists Brook Forrest White, Jr. and Susie Slabaugh White. The two artists have been on the forefront of the glass art community in Louisville for several years. As founders of Flame Run Glass studio in 2004, they have been instrumental to the development of the glass art community in the region.
Susie Slabaugh White uses glass as a vehicle for her uninhibited, figurative images. Susie received degrees in painting from Washington University and Savannah College of Art and Design, with a study of printmaking at the Santa Reparta School of Art and Design in Florence, Italy. In 1999, she began experimenting with glass. This combination of interests can be seen in her newest pieces. Shades of the fin-de-siecle painters, Egon Schiele, Max Beckman and Oskar Kokoschka, who created art amidst an era of radical change and decadence, are evident in Slabaugh's painting. Her powerful line and twisting forms move across each vessel like figures around a Greek krater. Using the graal technique, Slabaugh creates expressive, painted images within the depths of her glass pieces.
In stark contrast, the large, blown forms by Brook Forrest White, Jr., are entirely abstract and use color to complement the form. As a 1991 graduate of the glass program at Centre College headed by Stephen Rolfe Powell, White has been an intent vessel maker for almost 20 years. His newest pieces exhibit the distinctive quality of glass to suspend rich color in space. White juxtaposes layers of striking opaque and transparent hues within each piece using the traditional, encalmo technique, in which several bubbles of molten color are joined into one vessel. |
